Description
HP P40511-B21 1.92TB SAS 2.5" SSD
The P40511-B21 is a 1.92TB SAS drive from HP, built in the 2.5-inch SFF size and running at 12Gb/s. SAS is the part to notice here. It's a server interface, and it carries data at double the ceiling SATA can reach. The drive is hot-pluggable as well, so it comes out of a running chassis without taking the server down with it. Triple-level cell flash does the storing, under a Mixed Use endurance rating.
Key Features
- 1.92TB of capacity in a single drive bay, roughly double what a 960GB drive of the same shape holds
- 12Gb/s SAS interface, twice the top speed a SATA connection can manage
- Hot-pluggable design, so a failed drive comes out, and a fresh one goes in while the server keeps running
- Mixed-use endurance rating, built for workloads that write about as much as they read
- Triple-level cell flash, holding three bits in each memory cell
- 2.5-inch SFF body carrying HP's own part number P40511-B21
Performance and Applications
SAS earns its place in servers that work their drives hard and keep working them. The controller manages deeper command queues than SATA handles, which keeps things steady when requests pile in together.
Add hot-plug support, and you get an array you can service without booking a maintenance window. 1.92TB is a common size for virtualisation hosts, database volumes and RAID sets built from several drives rather than one large one. It also fits mail stores and shared file volumes that stay busy all day.
Compatibility and Installation
SAS and SATA don't swap both ways. A SAS controller or backplane will happily run SATA drives, but a SATA-only port won't run this one. You'll need a SAS controller and a free 2.5-inch SFF bay, along with the carrier tray that matches your chassis generation.
HP P40511-B21 for Hot-Swap SAS Arrays
For an array that has to stay online through a drive failure, the P40511-B21 slots in and out without downtime. 1.92 TB of mixed-use SAS flash per bay.
